Deniz Atalay was born in 1977 and grew up in Ankara, Turkiye. He got his musical education from several local teachers in Ankara such as Hatıra Ahmedli (composition & solfeggio), Önder Özkoç (composition) and Murat Arkan (jazz guitar). Living in a “bridge country” such as Turkiye helped him to digest different styles of music and the atmosphere of Anatolia.
In 1999 Deniz decided to study jazz guitar and he passed exams of the Royal Conservatoire – The Hague (Netherlands). After a time he resigned from the conservatorium and decided to concentrate on Turkish Music. He got Turkish Music & Theory lessons from Ahmet Polat, which helped him to improve his fretless guitar playing and build synthesis of harmony and makam (modal) in his original music. Later on he moved to Poland in 2004, played & recorded in different projects and gave many concerts around the country. During these 7 years he played with several talented musicians such as pianist Marcin Malinowski, guitarists Mehdi Gholami and Maciek Ciemplik, vibraphonist Marcin Ciupidro and percussionist Daniel Monski. He also made commercial projects with İlter Kalkancı and composed in pop style. He moved back to Turkiye in 2010.
In 2016 he released his first album “Denizin Ötesinde” (Beyond the Sea). Talented musicians such as Cezary Kondrad, Arto Tunçboyacıyan, Marcin Malinowski contributed to the album. Deniz Atalay is also a Bioenergy Therapist and Certfied Public Accountant.
